The New Mutants has had a rough road to getting onto our movie screens, and it still has a little ways to go. It was originally slated for release this past April, before it was pushed to February 22, 2019. That date wouldn’t hold either, as the film was pushed back again to August 2, 2019.

I’m still wondering if this movie will even be released now that Disney has bought out Fox. Is this one of the last Fox mutant movies that we’ll see? or will this end up being a movie we only see bootlegs of in 20 years?

The change in artists is jarring, but they’re back to the style of art for the series that I remember from volume one.

  • Comic Review for week of August 29th, 2018
The cover is a three panel fold out that surprised me.  The story inside has been told a few times (scarlet <3 snake eyes on a boat) and does not feature anyone that’s on the cover, but man that cover is great.

  • Comic Review for week of August 29th, 2018
I’m not sure if I’m a fan of having this world altering series come out monthly while other issues of the world are coming out at the same time.  At the end of the day the other series were off doing their own thing in other universes (shadowman) or doing flashbacks (x-o manowar), but I think it would have served everyone better if this was a weekly for an entire month.

  • Comic Review for week of August 29th, 2018
I still need to pick up the first issue of this (or just get the TPB), but the fourth issue wrapped up the story in a satisfying way with art that was on par with what I expect from a Dredd book.

  • Comic Review for week of August 29th, 2018
This was on my pull list at LOCG, but I neglected to actually order it or even pick it up after noticing my negligence.

  • Comic Review for week of August 29th, 2018
Not the last issue?  I thought this was a four issue mini series, but it’s not.  The art is fantastic, the story is middling, but maybe it’s going to go somewhere in issue 5?

  • Comic Review for week of August 29th, 2018
A story that doesn’t matter in a series that’s already been canceled, but for the completionists out there you get to see how Poe Dameron does a thing!

  • Comic Review for week of August 29th, 2018
These books are good, but good grief they are dense. This one I had to read in a couple sittings, there’s just so much going on with each page, I really wanted to let it soak in.

  • Comic Review for week of August 29th, 2018
I’m not really too happy with this flashback story over 4 months, but I guess they had to do something with X-O while the Harbinger’s war story was going on.  I’m not happy with what they did with X-O in that story either, so I’m really hoping they get back to stories that are palatable in the main series.

Here’s some snap judgements on the comics I read this week:

  • Comic Review for week of August 22th, 2018
I’m surprised how much I’m enjoying a Valiant book with no superheroes in it.
  • Comic Review for week of August 22th, 2018
I’m assuming this is the final Buffy story due to fox taking back the franchise for their inevitable merger with Disney?   Regardless, it’s been well written and I’m sad to see the series go.

  • Comic Review for week of August 22th, 2018
Why she gotta be so violent all the time?

  • Comic Review for week of August 22th, 2018
This is one of the most wordy Marvel books that I’ve picked up in a long time.  Normally I enjoy reading wordy comics, but this one just kinda spins in the mud for a bit and doesn’t go anywhere.

  • Comic Review for week of August 22th, 2018
Oh, the Punisher is off killing people because he’s the Punisher and they’re bad guys.  I don’t believe the main person that’s killed here is going to stay dead very long, they’re one of the biggest villains of the Marvel Universe and it would be just plain stupid to have “The Punisher” be the one that puts them in the ground forever.

  • Comic Review for week of August 22th, 2018
I’m pretty sure this is a new writing team and I’m not sure that I’m a fan yet.

    Magic Man?

  • Comic Review for week of August 22th, 2018
Emperor Pappy is a rude man and this issue lays out all the reasons why Vader ultimately threw him down a shaft.

  • Comic Review for week of August 22th, 2018
“Fungal Spectral Ghost of a Dead Jedi” is not a phrase I would have thought I would ever run in to, yet here we are.  This is consistently one of the better Star Wars books that come out every month, and what I would hope for in the “Star Wars Story” movies.

Story felt rushed and out of place, but it’s a good issue to start with, they even have a “previously on” and “who you need to know about” at the start of the issue.

  • Comic Review for week of August 15th, 2018
I somehow missed the first issue of this, but I’m assuming that Broccoli is up to something nefarious, but there wasn’t much nefarious stuff going on here, just a standard shuttlecraft ride from the Enterprise to the surface of the planet.  Spoilers: it sorts crashes, much to no one’s surprise.

  • Comic Review for week of August 15th, 2018
Photo realistic comic art is unnerving when it comes to actors you know doing stuff you’ve never seen them do before, like Woody Harrelson fighting a giant tentacle monster.

  • Comic Review for week of August 15th, 2018

Another issue of Poe Dameron in which Poe is sitting in a chair the entire time watching a Holo of other people doing exciting things. At this point the story is feeling over extended and should have been wrapped up in a single issue, but that’s not the way Marvel nor LucasArts works.

A periodical-based comics shop in SF is in jeopardy of closing.

Absolutely fantastic opinion piece about the future of the comic books industry. Specifically he mentions Spider-Geddon which looks like it could be a really cool miniseries, but when I was doing my Previews order I couldn’t make heads or tails of how many issues were going to be involved and what exactly I would be getting into or what I needed to read to even know what was going on.  Much like Brian, I have no faith that Marvel Comics will have a series with a distinct start, middle, and end, and don’t want to get roped into a mini series with 8 different tie in series and 30 different variant covers, none of which actually look very good.

In 100 Episodes, The A.V. Club examines the shows that made it to that number, considering both how they advanced and reflected the medium and what contributed to their popularity and/or longevity. This entry covers Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., which has run for five seasons and 11o episodes from 2013 to now, premiering five years ago on September 24, 2013. A shortened 13-episode sixth season is set to begin airing summer 2019.

That first season was painful and they really should have integrated the Hydra thing much better than they ultimately did. That being said, the last two seasons of this show have been among the best comic books television I’ve ever seen.

For the first five days (Aug. 30 – Sep. 3), all 20 films will be shown in the order they were released. The following two days (Sep. 4-5) will be “theme days” centered around origin stories and team-ups. Finally, the event will wrap up on Sep. 6 with encore showings of two of the films, as voted on by fans.

As per Deadline, Greg Berlanti … Continued

  • Comic Review for week of July 27th, 2018

I enjoyed this much more than I planned on enjoying it, I do wonder though if it ties into the wider Valiant Universe at all.

A shame the series is canceled, I’ve really enjoyed the 4 issues I’ve read.  Luckily it’s being started back up with a completely different premise as “Ascender” with a world of magic.

Reading this while also reading the other Valiant comics coming out is a pretty confusing exercise, I wish they had gone weekly with this story and only released HWII stuff during that time period.

Hyper violent and at times I wonder if this kid ever ages.  Time has moved forward for KICK-ASS, why not for HIT-GIRL?

I’m enjoying these IDW mini series much more than the official Megazine or even 2000AD, guess I can’t deal well with the anthology style of storytelling.

This War Machine story arch has been absolutely fantastic, I’m sad to see it end.

I occurs to me that I didn’t actually buy this comic but intended to.

This is only the second issue of Doctor Aphra that I’ve read and it’s ok.  I think I need to read more of the back story to really have an opinion on it, but I really enjoy the idea of a floating prison colony that’s tub boated around the galaxy to attack pirate ships.

  • Comic Review for week of July 27th, 2018

This has been a somewhat disappointing mini series so far. Art work is pretty good, but there’s something forgettable and bland about the story.

  • Comic Review for week of July 27th, 2018

The original X-Men: Grand Design was a densely packed, fantastic journey through the origins and first stories of the x-men, this is a look into the new group of x-men that came around during the 70’s and it’s just a densely fantastic as the original mini series.   Not a quick read by any stretch, I still suggest it if you’re a mutant fan.

Fantastically boring, I started reading this story because it was about a guy with a space suit blowing stuff up, this issue has no space suit and no explosions.

In what will be the calm tranquility before the storm hits, Tom King revealed at San Diego Comic-Con what his big event comic, Heroes in Crisis will be about. In an over-the-top and luxurious breakfast experience on Friday that dressed the press in white robes, seated on pillows, King delivered his next depressing but heroic story in a man-made sanctuary experience.

The artwork here looks absolutely fantastic, this wasn’t on my pull list before but I think this preview just sealed the deal for me.

Thor: Ragnarok is not anime, it’s a live-action comic book movie. But let’s just pretend, for a second, that it is anime. And that this is it’s intro.
