Disney is known for their squeaky clean, family-friendliness. There are parents throughout American who trust Disney with protecting their children from anything obscene or inappropriate, to the point of allowing their children to watch only Disney films exclusively. Story felt rushed and out of place, but it’s a good issue to start with, they even have a “previously on” and “who you need to know about” at the start of the issue.

  • Comic Review for week of August 15th, 2018
I somehow missed the first issue of this, but I’m assuming that Broccoli is up to something nefarious, but there wasn’t much nefarious stuff going on here, just a standard shuttlecraft ride from the Enterprise to the surface of the planet.  Spoilers: it sorts crashes, much to no one’s surprise.

  • Comic Review for week of August 15th, 2018
Photo realistic comic art is unnerving when it comes to actors you know doing stuff you’ve never seen them do before, like Woody Harrelson fighting a giant tentacle monster.

  • Comic Review for week of August 15th, 2018

Another issue of Poe Dameron in which Poe is sitting in a chair the entire time watching a Holo of other people doing exciting things. At this point the story is feeling over extended and should have been wrapped up in a single issue, but that’s not the way Marvel nor LucasArts works.

A periodical-based comics shop in SF is in jeopardy of closing.

Absolutely fantastic opinion piece about the future of the comic books industry. Specifically he mentions Spider-Geddon which looks like it could be a really cool miniseries, but when I was doing my Previews order I couldn’t make heads or tails of how many issues were going to be involved and what exactly I would be getting into or what I needed to read to even know what was going on.  Much like Brian, I have no faith that Marvel Comics will have a series with a distinct start, middle, and end, and don’t want to get roped into a mini series with 8 different tie in series and 30 different variant covers, none of which actually look very good.

In 100 Episodes, The A.V. Club examines the shows that made it to that number, considering both how they advanced and reflected the medium and what contributed to their popularity and/or longevity. This entry covers Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., which has run for five seasons and 11o episodes from 2013 to now, premiering five years ago on September 24, 2013. A shortened 13-episode sixth season is set to begin airing summer 2019.

That first season was painful and they really should have integrated the Hydra thing much better than they ultimately did. That being said, the last two seasons of this show have been among the best comic books television I’ve ever seen.

It’s the 10th Anniversary of Marvel Studios and we’re celebrating. For the first time ever, you can experience all 20 films from the MCU, only in IMAX.

For the first five days (Aug. 30 – Sep. 3), all 20 films will be shown in the order they were released. The following two days (Sep. 4-5) will be “theme days” centered around origin stories and team-ups. Finally, the event will wrap up on Sep. 6 with encore showings of two of the films, as voted on by fans.

A creative industry requires artists like the ‘Guardians’ director who push boundaries, make (offensive) mistakes and evolve, writes Hollywood Reporter columnist Marc Bernardin: “To demand that every artist who works for you to have never had a past…is asking for people who will make boring art.”

Considering the backlash Disney is rightly getting for their kneejerk reaction, the next few months are going to be interesting.

  • Comic Review for week of July 27th, 2018

I enjoyed this much more than I planned on enjoying it, I do wonder though if it ties into the wider Valiant Universe at all.

  • Comic Review for week of July 27th, 2018

A shame the series is canceled, I’ve really enjoyed the 4 issues I’ve read.  Luckily it’s being started back up with a completely different premise as “Ascender” with a world of magic.

  • Comic Review for week of July 27th, 2018

Reading this while also reading the other Valiant comics coming out is a pretty confusing exercise, I wish they had gone weekly with this story and only released HWII stuff during that time period.

  • Comic Review for week of July 27th, 2018

I occurs to me that I didn’t actually buy this comic but intended to.

  • Comic Review for week of July 27th, 2018

This is only the second issue of Doctor Aphra that I’ve read and it’s ok.  I think I need to read more of the back story to really have an opinion on it, but I really enjoy the idea of a floating prison colony that’s tub boated around the galaxy to attack pirate ships.

  • Comic Review for week of July 27th, 2018

This has been a somewhat disappointing mini series so far. Art work is pretty good, but there’s something forgettable and bland about the story.

  • Comic Review for week of July 27th, 2018

The original X-Men: Grand Design was a densely packed, fantastic journey through the origins and first stories of the x-men, this is a look into the new group of x-men that came around during the 70’s and it’s just a densely fantastic as the original mini series.   Not a quick read by any stretch, I still suggest it if you’re a mutant fan.

  • Comic Review for week of July 27th, 2018

Fantastically boring, I started reading this story because it was about a guy with a space suit blowing stuff up, this issue has no space suit and no explosions.

BRITANNIA LOST EAGLES OF ROME #1
MAY182072
(W) Peter Milligan (A) Robert Gill (CA) Cary Nord
AN ALL-NEW EPIC BEGINS! Valiant’s sold-out descent into the horrors of the ancient world returns with A BLOODSTAINED JUMPING-ON POINT from legendary comics master Peter Milligan (Detective Comics) and Harvey Award-nominated artist Robert Gill (BOOK OF DEATH) as Antonius Axia, history’s first detective, launches into an otherworldly mystery of monsters, magic, and conspiracy at the boundaries of human understanding…
The Roman standard – the eagle borne at the front of each Roman legion – was more than just a symbol of the soldiers that carried it… It was a symbol of Rome itself, the ultimate embodiment of the empire’s power…
But now, in the mist-shrouded Germanic forest of Tottenwald, the unthinkable has happened: A rampaging barbarian horde has crushed three of Rome’s most highly skilled detachments in battle… and captured their mighty Roman eagles.
His authority threatened by this all-too-public shame, the mad emperor Nero has dispatched Antonius Axia, the empire’s finest “detectioner” and hero of Britannia, and Achillia, the sword-wielding champion of the gladiatorial arena, to reclaim his stolen relics at any cost.
But what began as a simple mission will soon become a terrifying journey into the dark heart of belief itself as the isolated woodlands of Rome’s enemies reveal unseen dimensions…and the true power of the legion’s lost eagles threatens to consume any who would pursue them…

action comics 1000 Action Comics #1000 review

Celebrate 1000 issues of Action Comics with an all-star lineup of top talent as they pay tribute to the comic that started it all! From today’s explosive action to a previously unpublished tale illustrated by the legendary Curt Swan to the Man of Tomorrow’s future-this very special, oversized issue presents the best of the best in Superman stories!

Low quality art with stories that had no connection to the stories in Action Comics #990-999 and will have no impact on issue #1001. None of the stories even featured the CURRENT Superman, which is a time hopping nightmare for Booster Gold, the current “guardian of time” that tries to prevent Superman from destroying the time stream. See, Superman went back in time to see what the final moments of Krypton were like and somehow managed to break everything, but nevermind about that, that storyline was dropped with no real resolution so Superman could come back to the current timeline to watch Lois Lane die. Don’t worry about that though, Booster Gold changed the timeline to save Lois Lane.  He’s apparently left Superman and is off breaking Batman’s timeline now, so much for being the guardian of time!

None of this is mentioned in Superman #1000, which is a low effort, low quality cash grab from DC Comics. $8 for an 80 page comic anthology featuring 5-10 page stories of OTHER supermen.

Remember when superman was interesting? When he was dead?

I’m canceling this series after this issue, what a waste of time and money.

0 661x1024 Thanos Rising review

The vile face of Thanos left audiences in shock after last summer’s Marvel Studios’ “The Avengers” movie…but who is this eerily disturbing villain? Discover the hidden truth, as Thanos rises as the unrivaled rogue of wretchedness in this gripping tale of tragedy, deceit and destiny. Where did this demi-god of destruction come from – and more importantly, what does he want from the universe? Death has been shadowing Thanos for his entire life, watching his inner darkness grow…but why? The answers come from the incredible creative team of Jason Aaron (Wolverine, X-Men Origins) and Simone Bianchi (Wolverine, Astonishing X-Men)! Prepare for a journey that will not only change the course of one boy’s life…but will soon change the very nature of the Marvel Universe. What comes after “Marvel NOW!”? Whatever it is, it starts HERE!

I believe that this story has already been invalidated, dismissed, and retroconned, so thanks Marvel for not having any idea what you’re doing with your comic books!

That being said, this is a great book, if a bit predictive around the middle part. Great art and the story flows well enough that I can recommend it to anyone interested in reading a story about how Thanos came to be the Mad Titan, just read it with the knowledge that this is already not the official story anymore even though it only came out in 2013.

Free if you have amazon prime or kindle unlimited.

This is the first time I’ve done an official previews order for comic books, where I went through their entire catelog of bullshit they’re selling and pick out what I’m interested in and give it to the local comic shop (LCS), who adds it all to a spread sheet, then manually go through the Diamond website and orders all the shit.  It’s one of the most backwards ass systems that I’ve personally used.  There’s talk about a modernized system coming “soon” where you just log into the Previews site and select what you want, then 60 days later it shows up at your LCS, but who knows when and if that system will ever be delivered.

Since I’m all about generating content for my sites, I’m going to be posting my orders to www.myconfinedspace.com www.comiccovers.com and www.comic-images.com along with some comments on why I’m reading it or perhaps even making fun of the cover.

These comics are due to be delivered to Local Comic Shops in June.

Quick edit: this post is breaking the entire site, so uh, lemme put a more tag here to try to fix it:

ALL-NEW ARC! ALL-NEW JUMPING-ON POINT! “DEAD AND GONE” – PART ONE!
For years, Jack Boniface believed that he knew the true story of the Shadowman loa – the true story of the curse inside him. He was wrong.
For the first time, Jack Boniface is about to discover the long-hidden history of the supernatural power that became his birthright… Unmoored in time and space, the loa is about to reveal its untold dimensions…and now, the last defender of the wall between our realm and the Deadside is falling backwards through the astral void, finding himself face to face with his forebears across the centuries – from the paranoia-addled alleyways of 1940s New York to the fire-scorched plantations of the Civil War…all the way back to the primeval height of the African savannah in 40,000 B.C.!
In the shock-inducing aftermath of “FEAR OF THE DARK,” master storyteller Andy Diggle (Green Arrow: Year One) leads a rotating cast of superstar artists – including Shawn Martinbrough (Thief of Thieves), Doug Braithwaite (Justice), and Renato Guedes (Wolverine) – to reveal the full scope and power of the Shadowman mythos…and how three of its forgotten champions stoked its earliest embers…with a legend-fueled odyssey into eons past as “DEAD AND GONE” tells all!

I’m happy they’re finally starting a “jumping on point”, as the first issue of this series had no context and no indication of who the character is or what his powers are, how he got them, or what’s even going on his his world. Just this: plop, here’s a guy freaking out about a thing (here’s a guy (notes)(notes) here’s a guy but in black in white) here’s more notes (notes on the notes)….what I’m saying is that first issue of this series was a nearly unreadable cluster fuck.

But when our century’s Bloodshot finds himself delivered to the dawn of the 41st century with one last mission to fulfill, two Valiant legends will finally come face to face…just as the secret revelation that binds them together across the ages will forever reshape Bloodshot’s place at the center of the Valiant Universe!
From superstar writer Jeff Lemire (The Terrifics, Black Hammer) and artistic powerhouse Doug Braithwaite (X-O MANOWAR, Journey into Mystery), Valiant’s Eisner Award-nominated superhero saga goes back to the far, far future for the ultimate meeting of man and machine at the crossroads of tomorrow and today!

And so…the unstoppable X-O Manowar enters the fray!
From East to West, the nation has been cleaved down the middle as Livewire’s defensive attack on the U.S. power grid envelops America in darkness and sets the stage for the biggest clash of powers ever witnessed… On one side, Peter Stanchek’s ragtag team of Renegades – alongside their newly activated army of untrained and wildly unstable psiots – ready themselves for an unsparing firefight with H.A.R.D. Corps and the agents of Omen. On the other, Ninjak and Bloodshot prepare to enter Livewire’s domain inside blacked-out Los Angeles. But as the casualties pile up and the losses mount on both sides, none of them will be ready to confront the full fury of raw power personified as X-O Manowar makes his long-awaited return after a year of self-imposed exile among the stars…and delivers a single concussive strike that will send shockwaves across the whole of the Valiant Universe!
The most powerful Valiant event attempted continues in full force with another seismic chapter as New York Times best-selling author Matt Kindt (X-O MANOWAR, Mind MGMT) and superstar artist Tomás Giorello (X-O MANOWAR) unleash X-O Manowar on a world he thought he’d left behind…and fire off the next brutal volley in the coast-to-coast clash of comics icons that will leave no hero unscathed!
In Shops: Jun 27, 2018
SRP: $3.99

It’s a shame you have to buy a miniseries to find out what X-O gets up to on his first days back from solar sailing, that feels more like a Marvel move than a Valiant one.

But deep within the hero-filled halls of this otherwise prestigious institute, Principal Harada is hiding a mysterious secret…and Valiant High’s newest foreign exchange student, Colin “Ninjak” King, is ready to seek out the truth – once he’s done giving omega-level nerd Peter Stanchek a cool-kid makeover first, of course!

Now, the untold story of Aric’s swashbuckling youth – and how it unknowingly forged his fate as the defender of 21st century Earth – can finally be told as the man who would be X-O Manowar leaves the Visigoth homeland behind to infiltrate the Roman Empire’s gleaming capital from within!

I have absolutely loved every issue of this series, what is it about the Thrawn persona that seems to play so well in the Star Trek Universe?

Ok, so the rest of these below are the “True Believers” series which I thought was pretty dumb when I first heard of it, but I seem to have fallen for them hook, line, and sinker.  They’re all reprints of older books and sell for a single dollar, which is basically below cost selling of comic books.  Last month they did eight Venom books, they were all the first issues in some classic Venom stories, some not so classic from just a couple years ago.  I’m pretty sure this is the same sales tactic they’re using with their digital sales where they give you the first issue free in the hopes you’ll like what you see and buy the rest of the books.

I’m not saying it’s working, but I did go out and find a few TPBs for free on amazon based on their recommendations, specifically Thanos Rising, which is free if you have Prime, Prime Reading, or are Jeff Bezos.
