  • Comic Review for week of November 14, 2018

I’ve heard this is one of the best selling Valiant comics in years, but it was still underwhelming for me.  Hopefully the story makes a little more sense after a few more issues.

  • Comic Review for week of November 14, 2018

Wasn’t on my pull list, but my comic shop pulled it for me anyways, thank god.  This was a fun but brief journey back to the Doctor Horrible Universe.

  • Comic Review for week of November 14, 2018

What a terrible conclusion to a terrible storyline.

  • Comic Review for week of November 14, 2018

A stunning tale of fantastic four members all coming together to do fantastic things against an unbeatable enemy.  I’m happy that Mr Fantastic has a name for particular types of beings in the Marvel Multiverse, but I’m concerned that with the end of this issue comes the end of their multiverse / outer space adventures.  I’m not really looking forward to them rejoining Earth and am much happier reading about them doing fantastic things elsewhere.

  • Comic Review for week of November 14, 2018

That cover is gorgeous isn’t it?  The story inside is pretty damn fantastic and they perfectly get the dialogue, which has been a struggle for past Firefly books.  I look forward to the next issue!

    Bleh.

    Space Horror done right.

  • Comic Review for week of November 14, 2018

Boring and unneeded.  Skip it and just go see the movie.

  • Comic Review for week of November 14, 2018

Dark and muddled art but I like where the story is going.  I’m not too familiar with the friendship between Ninja-K and The Eternal Warrior, but I get the impression they’re pretty darn close.

  • Comic Review for week of November 14, 2018

I honestly felt like this was an episode of the Star Trek Animated series.  Fantastic retro art direction for both the Trek crew and the Robots in disguise.

  • Comic Review for week of November 14, 2018

This issue left me feeling like there’s no possible way for them to top what they’ve done.  Yet I’ve felt that way for the last few Vader issues, so since I was wrong before, I’ll be happy to be wrong in the future.

Bad art and a boring story, I regret picking this up.  The cover is cool though, but I get the impression from the interior story that this person is not Hal Jordon?

An interesting look into how Solo got his name and what “solo” essentially means in the Star Wars universe, which is a small and minor change that changes literally everything you knew about the character.

  • Comic Review for week of November 7, 2018

Fantastic comic that I strongly suggest to anyone that has the mind to read something fun and amazing.  It’s not actually the first “Trump’s Titans” book, something I didn’t know until this issue got to me, but it says that all the issues are number one because Super Trump only puts his name on things that are #1.  It’s seriously one of the best mocucomics I’ve read yet.

Back Issues Fun:
Science Dog Written by Kirkman (Walking Dead, Invincible) at the peak of when he was doing comics and not being a media empire runner and boy howdy it shows.  If you liked Invincible at it’s greatest, you’ll like Science Dog.  It’s a short story though, so even though it has great art and a fantastic story, there’s only enough to get you interested and not enough to really satiate your hunger for more quality Kirkman product.

Sony’s first solo foray into the “Spider-Man” universe after striking a deal with Marvel is a hit with audiences despite a critical pounding.

“Venom” was an ok film that had nearly nothing to do with the original comic book character and I have major doubts about Sony’s Marvel Movies, but maybe they’ll be able to pull something off despite not having a solid start?

Jesse L. Martin, who plays Detective Joe West on The Flash, is taking a break from the show for medical reasons. According to EW, Martin suffered a back injury during the hiatus between Seasons 4-5, which is why regular viewers might have noticed that he’s been seated for the vast majority of his scenes in the just-started fifth season.

What a shame, he’s one of the highlights of the series.

Notable mentions:

  • Captain Canuck First Summer Special – Printed the same month that I was born, this is a hilariously poorly printed and constructed book, there’s no set uniform for the Captain, the stories are jumpy, and there’s likely not a single page that was error free.  I loved this look into how poorly a book can be published and how quality control for both the character’s designs and print production go hand in hand in making a good comic book experience.
  • X-O Manowar #19 75th issue anniversary, which was shipped late by Diamond, a great story about picking up the pieces from the rushed and poorly executed “harbinger 2” mini series.  All the post-war stuff has been so much better than the actual mini series, I do wonder if that was intentional somewhat.  Also, the numbering shenanigans reminds me that it’s not just the big two that have problems with counting.

If you were one of the people incredibly excited by the possibilities left open at the end of Iron Fist season two, we have some very bad news. Netflix just cancelled the show, making it the first Marvel show to get the axe.

Such a shame, the second season was so much better than the first one, I can only imagine how much better the third one would be. My only hope is that this makes way for a Daughters of the Dragon series that guest stars Danny Rand.

Now that the ink is drying on Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises are now housed under one roof. And where does The Thing fit into all of this?

Disney CEO Bob Iger wields perhaps more power in the film world than anyone else, as his company owns the most successful franchises in history and isn’t looking to let up any time soon. Star Wars, all the Disney princesses, and of course, the MCU — Iger’s got a lot going on. Which means his team is ultra-protective of it, cracking down when, say, offensive and ill-conceived old tweets from one of their directors suddenly resurface.

This story is getting bonkers, but not in a good way.  Lady has time to go to college, raise her kids, sleep, run a criminal empire, and isn’t ready to pull her own eyeballs out from her head?  Additionally, she’s taking “just” $800 a week from her criminal activities and saying it’s a “soldier’s pay”?  I don’t know much about military pay, but having $3200 a month take home sounds great, especially if it’s just side revenue to her main job.

The change in artists is jarring, but they’re back to the style of art for the series that I remember from volume one.

  • Comic Review for week of August 29th, 2018
The cover is a three panel fold out that surprised me.  The story inside has been told a few times (scarlet <3 snake eyes on a boat) and does not feature anyone that’s on the cover, but man that cover is great.

  • Comic Review for week of August 29th, 2018
I’m not sure if I’m a fan of having this world altering series come out monthly while other issues of the world are coming out at the same time.  At the end of the day the other series were off doing their own thing in other universes (shadowman) or doing flashbacks (x-o manowar), but I think it would have served everyone better if this was a weekly for an entire month.

  • Comic Review for week of August 29th, 2018
I still need to pick up the first issue of this (or just get the TPB), but the fourth issue wrapped up the story in a satisfying way with art that was on par with what I expect from a Dredd book.

  • Comic Review for week of August 29th, 2018
This was on my pull list at LOCG, but I neglected to actually order it or even pick it up after noticing my negligence.

  • Comic Review for week of August 29th, 2018
Not the last issue?  I thought this was a four issue mini series, but it’s not.  The art is fantastic, the story is middling, but maybe it’s going to go somewhere in issue 5?

  • Comic Review for week of August 29th, 2018
A story that doesn’t matter in a series that’s already been canceled, but for the completionists out there you get to see how Poe Dameron does a thing!

  • Comic Review for week of August 29th, 2018
These books are good, but good grief they are dense. This one I had to read in a couple sittings, there’s just so much going on with each page, I really wanted to let it soak in.

  • Comic Review for week of August 29th, 2018
I’m not really too happy with this flashback story over 4 months, but I guess they had to do something with X-O while the Harbinger’s war story was going on.  I’m not happy with what they did with X-O in that story either, so I’m really hoping they get back to stories that are palatable in the main series.

This one had me alternating between laughing and scratching my head in confusion. Possibly this is based off of a piece of fan art?

The Batman The Animates Series Blu-ray box set coming this fall has dropped in price and is adding a digital copy. Check out the remastered opening credits.

The price drop got my attention, but the addition of digital copies made this an instant purchase. I’ll be able to have the box up on a shelf and still be able to watch whatever episodes I want!

We’ve all received crappy gifts for holidays and birthdays. But maybe none on the level of “this is so bad that one day I will completely defy you, shrug off your magical lightning attacks, lift you over my head, and throw you into the nearest random gaping shaft I can find.”

Here’s some snap judgements on the comics I read this week:

  • Comic Review for week of August 22th, 2018
I’m surprised how much I’m enjoying a Valiant book with no superheroes in it.

I’m assuming this is the final Buffy story due to fox taking back the franchise for their inevitable merger with Disney?   Regardless, it’s been well written and I’m sad to see the series go.

Why she gotta be so violent all the time?

This is one of the most wordy Marvel books that I’ve picked up in a long time.  Normally I enjoy reading wordy comics, but this one just kinda spins in the mud for a bit and doesn’t go anywhere.

Oh, the Punisher is off killing people because he’s the Punisher and they’re bad guys.  I don’t believe the main person that’s killed here is going to stay dead very long, they’re one of the biggest villains of the Marvel Universe and it would be just plain stupid to have “The Punisher” be the one that puts them in the ground forever.

I’m pretty sure this is a new writing team and I’m not sure that I’m a fan yet.

    Magic Man?

Emperor Pappy is a rude man and this issue lays out all the reasons why Vader ultimately threw him down a shaft.

“Fungal Spectral Ghost of a Dead Jedi” is not a phrase I would have thought I would ever run in to, yet here we are.  This is consistently one of the better Star Wars books that come out every month, and what I would hope for in the “Star Wars Story” movies.
