CDBLF suitcase 698x1024 Comic Book Legal Defense Fund backs traveller arrested at Canadian border for pornographic manga on his hard drive

The images at issue are all comics in the manga style. No photographic evidence of criminal behavior is at issue. Nevertheless, a warrant was issued and the laptop was turned over to police. Consequently, the American has been charged with both the possession of child pornography as well as its importation into Canada. As a result, if convicted at trial, the American faces a minimum of one year in prison. This case could have far reaching implications for comic books and manga in North America.

The CBLDF’s Board of Directors voted unanimously to aid the case by raising funds to contribute to the defense and to help the defense with strategy and expert resources.

Brownstein says, “This is an important case that impacts the rights of everyone who reads, publishes, and makes comics and manga in North America. It underscores the dangers facing everyone traveling with comics, and it can establish important precedents regarding travelers rights. It also relates to the increasingly urgent issue of authorities prosecuting art as child pornography. While this case won’t set a US precedent, it can inform whatever precedent is eventually set. This case is also important with respect to artistic merit in the Canadian courts, and a good decision could bring Canadian law closer to US law in that respect. With the help of our supporters, we hope to raise the funds to wage a fight that yields good decisions and to create tools to help prevent these sorts of cases from continuing to spread.”

Story felt rushed and out of place, but it’s a good issue to start with, they even have a “previously on” and “who you need to know about” at the start of the issue.

I somehow missed the first issue of this, but I’m assuming that Broccoli is up to something nefarious, but there wasn’t much nefarious stuff going on here, just a standard shuttlecraft ride from the Enterprise to the surface of the planet.聽 Spoilers: it sorts crashes, much to no one’s surprise.

Photo realistic comic art is unnerving when it comes to actors you know doing stuff you’ve never seen them do before, like聽Woody Harrelson fighting a giant tentacle monster.

  • Comic Review for week of August 15th, 2018

Another issue of Poe Dameron in which Poe is sitting in a chair the entire time watching a Holo of other people doing exciting things. At this point the story is feeling over extended and should have been wrapped up in a single issue, but that’s not the way Marvel nor LucasArts works.

Here’s some snap judgements on the comics I read this week:

  • Comic Review for week of August 22th, 2018
I’m surprised how much I’m enjoying a Valiant book with no superheroes in it.
  • Comic Review for week of August 22th, 2018
I’m assuming this is the final Buffy story due to fox taking back the franchise for their inevitable merger with Disney?聽 聽Regardless, it’s been well written and I’m sad to see the series go.

Why she gotta be so violent all the time?

  • Comic Review for week of August 22th, 2018
This is one of the most wordy Marvel books that I’ve picked up in a long time.聽 Normally I enjoy reading wordy comics, but this one just kinda spins in the mud for a bit and doesn’t go anywhere.

  • Comic Review for week of August 22th, 2018
Oh, the Punisher is off killing people because he’s the Punisher and they’re bad guys.聽 I don’t believe the main person that’s killed here is going to stay dead very long, they’re one of the biggest villains of the Marvel Universe and it would be just plain stupid to have “The Punisher” be the one that puts them in the ground forever.

I’m pretty sure this is a new writing team and I’m not sure that I’m a fan yet.

“Fungal Spectral Ghost of a Dead Jedi” is not a phrase I would have thought I would ever run in to, yet here we are.聽 This is consistently one of the better Star Wars books that come out every month, and what I would hope for in the “Star Wars Story” movies.

    Valiant聽BLOODSHOT SALVATION #12聽 Aug 8th, 2018 聽路聽 $3.99
I’m not sure if this series is done now or even what it was all about.聽 I liked that they went back to 4001AD, if even for a brief moment.

Marvel Comics聽STAR WARS: DARTH VADER #19聽Aug 8th, 2018 聽路聽 $3.9

Darth Vader: Baby Killer.聽 There’s a few things I’m ok with in comics, but killing kids as much as they did in this issue was stomach twisting.

  • Comic Review for week of July 27th, 2018

I enjoyed this much more than I planned on enjoying it, I do wonder though if it ties into the wider Valiant Universe at all.

  • Comic Review for week of July 27th, 2018

A shame the series is canceled, I’ve really enjoyed the 4 issues I’ve read.聽 Luckily it’s being started back up with a completely different premise as “Ascender” with a world of magic.

  • Comic Review for week of July 27th, 2018

Reading this while also reading the other Valiant comics coming out is a pretty confusing exercise, I wish they had gone weekly with this story and only released HWII stuff during that time period.

  • Comic Review for week of July 27th, 2018

Hyper violent and at times I wonder if this kid ever ages.聽 Time has moved forward for KICK-ASS, why not for HIT-GIRL?
  • Comic Review for week of July 27th, 2018

I’m enjoying these IDW mini series much more than the official Megazine or even 2000AD, guess I can’t deal well with the anthology style of storytelling.

  • Comic Review for week of July 27th, 2018

This War Machine story arch has been absolutely fantastic, I’m sad to see it end.

  • Comic Review for week of July 27th, 2018

I occurs to me that I didn’t actually buy this comic but intended to.

  • Comic Review for week of July 27th, 2018

This is only the second issue of Doctor Aphra that I’ve read and it’s ok.聽 I think I need to read more of the back story to really have an opinion on it, but I really enjoy the idea of a floating prison colony that’s tub boated around the galaxy to attack pirate ships.

  • Comic Review for week of July 27th, 2018

This has been a somewhat disappointing mini series so far. Art work is pretty good, but there’s something forgettable and bland about the story.

  • Comic Review for week of July 27th, 2018

The original X-Men: Grand Design was a densely packed, fantastic journey through the origins and first stories of the x-men, this is a look into the new group of x-men that came around during the 70’s and it’s just a densely fantastic as the original mini series.聽 聽Not a quick read by any stretch, I still suggest it if you’re a mutant fan.

  • Comic Review for week of July 27th, 2018

Fantastically boring, I started reading this story because it was about a guy with a space suit blowing stuff up, this issue has no space suit and no explosions.

  • Comic Review for week of November 14, 2018

I’ve heard this is one of the best selling Valiant comics in years, but it was still underwhelming for me.聽 Hopefully the story makes a little more sense after a few more issues.

  • Comic Review for week of November 14, 2018

Wasn’t on my pull list, but my comic shop pulled it for me anyways, thank god.聽 This was a fun but brief journey back to the Doctor Horrible Universe.

  • Comic Review for week of November 14, 2018

What a terrible conclusion to a terrible storyline.

  • Comic Review for week of November 14, 2018

A stunning tale of fantastic four members all coming together to do fantastic things against an unbeatable enemy.聽 I’m happy that Mr Fantastic has a name for particular types of beings in the Marvel Multiverse, but I’m concerned that with the end of this issue comes the end of their multiverse / outer space adventures.聽 I’m not really looking forward to them rejoining Earth and am much happier reading about them doing fantastic things elsewhere.

  • Comic Review for week of November 14, 2018

That cover is gorgeous isn’t it?聽 The story inside is pretty damn fantastic and they perfectly get the dialogue, which has been a struggle for past Firefly books.聽 I look forward to the next issue!

  • Comic Review for week of November 14, 2018

    Bleh.

  • Comic Review for week of November 14, 2018

I like the new art direction, I like the skulls, I like the jewels, I hate the racist overtones of the bad guys.

  • Comic Review for week of November 14, 2018

    Space Horror done right.

  • Comic Review for week of November 14, 2018

Boring and unneeded.聽 Skip it and just go see the movie.

  • Comic Review for week of November 14, 2018

Dark and muddled art but I like where the story is going.聽 I’m not too familiar with the friendship between Ninja-K and The Eternal Warrior, but I get the impression they’re pretty darn close.

  • Comic Review for week of November 14, 2018

I honestly felt like this was an episode of the Star Trek Animated series.聽 Fantastic retro art direction for both the Trek crew and the Robots in disguise.

  • Comic Review for week of November 14, 2018

This issue left me feeling like there’s no possible way for them to top what they’ve done.聽 Yet I’ve felt that way for the last few Vader issues, so since I was wrong before, I’ll be happy to be wrong in the future.

  • Comic Review for week of November 21st and November 28th, 2018

A collection of short stories, of which only a couple rise to being notable, most noticeably the Supergirl story which comes out of nowhere with how beautiful it is.聽 It also feels like the first few pages of a much longer story that I would love to read.

  • Comic Review for week of November 21st and November 28th, 2018

It’s weird how Faith changes shape from panel to panel, but they ARE in a dreamworld, so maybe that’s why?

  • Comic Review for week of November 21st and November 28th, 2018

This is one boring as hell storyline.

  • Comic Review for week of November 21st and November 28th, 2018

I enjoy the DC Insiders much more than these previews books, pretty much everything they’re highlighting here has already been mentioned elsewhere.

  • Comic Review for week of November 21st and November 28th, 2018

Final issue I think?聽 The cover I got was amazing and I loved the holographic nature of it.聽 The story was a bit goofy and guest starred a couple people that are actively doing other things in their own books, so it was somewhat weird to see them doing completely out of character things in Q&W. Lookin at you XO.

  • Comic Review for week of November 21st and November 28th, 2018

Vader’s castle takes it’s final shape and boy howdy it took some sacrifices to get it there.

  • Comic Review for week of November 21st and November 28th, 2018

I don’t understand what’s going on with this story and why X-O seems like such a pushover for the entire storyline.

Back Issues!

Starlight聽– What if a man from Earth was teleported to an alien planet where he overthrew a dictator and became a hero to the entire alien planet?聽 Would anyone on Earth believe him if he was teleported back without much proof?聽 What would happen if those aliens came back 50 years later asking for help again?

Avatar: The Last Airbender Trade Paperbacks – Diamond solicited about 10 different Avatar trades that were pretty cheap, so I ordered them all.聽 Four shipments later and they’re still sending me one or two books at a time instead of just fulfilling the entire order at once. They’re literally the worst part of my experiences with comic book collecting and I honestly hope their monopoly gets broken up sooner rather than later.

  • Comic Review for week of November 7, 2018

Bad art and a boring story, I regret picking this up.聽 The cover is cool though, but I get the impression from the interior story that this person is not Hal Jordon?

  • Comic Review for week of November 7, 2018

An interesting look into how Solo got his name and what “solo” essentially means in the Star Wars universe, which is a small and minor change that changes literally everything you knew about the character.

  • Comic Review for week of November 7, 2018

Fantastic comic that I strongly suggest to anyone that has the mind to read something fun and amazing.聽 It’s not actually the first “Trump’s Titans” book, something I didn’t know until this issue got to me, but it says that all the issues are number one because Super Trump only puts his name on things that are #1.聽 It’s seriously one of the best mocucomics I’ve read yet.

Back Issues Fun:
Science Dog聽Written by Kirkman (Walking Dead, Invincible) at the peak of when he was doing comics and not being a media empire runner and boy howdy it shows.聽 If you liked Invincible at it’s greatest, you’ll like Science Dog.聽 It’s a short story though, so even though it has great art and a fantastic story, there’s only enough to get you interested and not enough to really satiate your hunger for more quality Kirkman product.
